At a Glance

The Chatterbox is an Exotic SMG that scales its rate of fire up to +60% as you land body shots, turning sustained fire into a self-amplifying DPS curve that peaks around 9M burst with full stacks. Built around stack management rather than raw stats, it rewards players who can read engagements and avoid panic reloads.

If you like weapons that reward trigger discipline and punish nervous reloads, this one fits. If you want point-and-click damage with no thinking, pick Lady Death.

Full Stats

| Stat | Value | | — | — | | Base Damage | 21,000 | | RPM (base) | 900 | | RPM (max stacks) | 1,440 | | Magazine | 50 | | Reload Time | 1.8s | | Optimal Range | 0–25m | | Headshot Multiplier | 1.5× | | Intrinsic Attrs | +15% Crit Chance, +15% Crit Damage | | Built-in Mods | Compensator, Laser Pointer (cannot be swapped) |

The 50-round magazine is the part most new players underestimate. It's not big — at full stacks you burn through it in roughly 2 seconds. Mag size mods on the weapon are non-negotiable for any serious build.

Weapon Talent

Box Magazine: Body shots build stacks of +1% Rate of Fire, up to a maximum of 60 stacks. Reloading consumes 60% of stacks.

The mechanic is simple on paper, awkward in practice. Every body shot adds a stack. Headshots do not. Stacks decay only when you reload, and a reload eats 60% of whatever you had — so reloading at 60 stacks drops you back to 24, and you have to climb again.

Real damage numbers from the calc:

The DPS curve means cold engagements undersell the weapon. Damage tests at 0 stacks make it look mid-tier; at 60 stacks it's one of the strongest SMGs in the game. This is why benchmarks vary so wildly online.

How to Hold Stacks

Three rules cover 90% of cases:

  1. Body shots build stacks. Headshots don't. Counter-intuitive, but the talent text is literal. Once you're capped, switch to headshots for the 1.5× multiplier.
  2. Don't reload at full mag. If you've got 5 rounds left and 60 stacks, finish the mag into something — even an enemy at half health — before reloading. Wasted reloads are the single biggest mistake players make with this gun.
  3. Burst-fire to extend stack uptime. Continuous spray empties the mag in 2 seconds. Tap-firing in 6–8 round bursts makes a magazine last 4–5 seconds, which is usually enough to clear an entire room without a reload.

Top Builds

Chatterbox × Strikers SMG

The classic pairing. Strikers stacks build off body shots, Chatterbox stacks build off body shots — both feed the same playstyle. Striker's bonus damage compensates for the body-shot focus, so you're not losing the headshot multiplier "for free." Run with Coyote's Mask or Ceska Brutality knee pads to push crit chance toward cap.

Chatterbox × Hunter's Fury Solo

Hunter's Fury's 4-piece bonus gives crit chance and damage on hit, which scales perfectly with the increased fire rate. As stacks climb, you're hitting more often, refreshing buffs faster, and the cycle compounds. Best solo Heroic build for SMG mains in TU22.1 — sustain is what wins solo runs, and Chatterbox is built for sustain.

Chatterbox × Glass Cannon Burst

Pure damage, no defense. Glass Cannon's +25% damage out, +50% damage in turns the Chatterbox into a one-shot wipe tool for groups, but you die if a sniper sneezes. Group play only, behind a tank. Useful for speedrunning content where you trust your team to hold aggro.

PvE vs PvP

PvE. This is where Chatterbox earns its slot. Heroic and Legendary content has long engagements, lots of red-bar fodder for stack-building, and tougher elites for the burst payoff. The 25m optimal range is short, but every SMG has that problem — you compensate with positioning, not weapon choice. Against bosses with dedicated weak points, you'll cap stacks on adds first, then dump the magazine into the boss at peak DPS. It's one of the few exotics that actively rewards how you sequence targets.

PvP. Mixed. The fire rate ramp is theoretically strong in DZ duels, but practically — you rarely get a long enough engagement to cap stacks before someone breaks line of sight. Most PvP fights are decided in the first 1–2 seconds, which is exactly when Chatterbox is at its weakest. If you want a meta SMG for Conflict, look at Cabaret or a roll-your-own crit SMG. Chatterbox in PvP is a fun pick, not an optimal one.

Pros & Cons

| Pros | Cons | | — | — | | Self-scaling RoF rewards good trigger discipline | Cold-start DPS is unimpressive | | Excellent synergy with stack-based gear sets | 50-round magazine empties fast at max stacks | | Built-in compensator + laser stabilize handling | Reload eats 60% of stacks — feels punishing | | Strong solo PvE choice for Heroic+ | Body-shot incentive fights against headshot habits | | Crit chance and damage built in | Weak in short PvP engagements | | 1.8s reload is fast for the magazine size | Locked mods (no custom muzzle/optic swaps) |

Comparison

| Weapon | Type | Base Dmg | RPM | Mag | Best For | | — | — | — | — | — | — | | The Chatterbox | Exotic SMG | 21,000 | 900 → 1,440 | 50 | Sustained crit DPS builds | | The Cabaret | Status SMG | 19,500 | 850 | 40 | Status effect / Foundry builds | | Lady Death | Named SMG | 22,000 | 900 | 30 | Burst damage, Glass Cannon | | Cold Relations | Named SMG | 20,500 | 950 | 40 | Hunter's Fury cold buffs |

Lady Death has the best paper damage and is the easiest to use — point, click, win. But it caps where it caps. Chatterbox starts lower and ends higher, with a wider DPS ceiling for players willing to manage the talent. Cabaret is in a different lane entirely (status / Foundry hybrid). Cold Relations is the closest direct competitor for Hunter's Fury builds — it's simpler, but loses the burst peak.

If you only want to learn one SMG: Lady Death. If you want the highest ceiling: Chatterbox.

FAQ

Is The Chatterbox still good in TU22?

Yes — Chatterbox remains one of the strongest sustained-DPS SMGs in TU22.1, particularly in Strikers and Hunter's Fury builds. The buffs to body-shot scaling in earlier patches were never reverted, so it's effectively in the same strong spot it's been since the Year 6 rebalance. It's not the easiest weapon to use, but the ceiling is higher than any non-exotic SMG.

Where do I farm The Chatterbox?

The Chatterbox drops from the named boss in the Roosevelt Island stronghold, with a guaranteed first-completion drop on each character. Targeted loot rotations occasionally include exotic SMG drops, which can give you a higher-rolled version. Most players run Roosevelt 2–3 times per character to get a god-roll, since the talent is fixed but the attribute rolls aren't.

Chatterbox vs Lady Death — which is better?

Lady Death wins on simplicity and burst, Chatterbox wins on sustain and ceiling. If your build relies on long engagements (Hunter's Fury 4pc, Strikers stack maintenance), Chatterbox out-damages Lady Death over a full encounter. If you do short, decisive fights — Conflict, fast-clear runs — Lady Death is the better pick. The two aren't really competing for the same slot.

Why does my DPS feel low with Chatterbox?

The most common cause is reloading too early — every reload at full stacks costs you 60% of your DPS amplification. Run a body-shot mag dump before reloading, even if you only have 10 rounds left. The second cause is missing too many shots: the talent only scales body shots that hit, and the short optimal range means anything past 30m is wasted ammo.

Should I use headshots or body shots with Chatterbox?

Use body shots until you're at 60 stacks, then switch to headshots. The 1.5× headshot multiplier is real damage you can't get from stacks, but you can't build stacks from headshots — so until you're capped, body fire is mathematically better. Once capped, every headshot is pure bonus damage on top of the +60% RoF.

Does Chatterbox work with Strikers?

Strikers and Chatterbox is one of the strongest pairings in the game. Both gear set and weapon talent reward continuous body shots, so you're not splitting your playstyle between two systems — you're building both stacks at once. Pair with Coyote's Mask for crit chance, run weapon damage on chest and backpack.

Is Chatterbox good for solo Heroic?

Yes — Hunter's Fury 4pc with Chatterbox is one of the most-used solo Heroic loadouts in TU22.1. The sustain damage and self-scaling RoF mean you don't run out of pressure mid-room, and Hunter's Fury's defensive bonuses keep you alive through the long engagements that Chatterbox needs to ramp up.

Can I run Chatterbox in PvP?

You can, but it's not optimal. PvP fights are decided in the first 1–2 seconds, before Chatterbox has time to build stacks. It works fine in DZ skirmishes against PvE-focused players, but in Conflict against any serious roster you'll get out-damaged by burst-oriented SMGs. Save Chatterbox for PvE — that's where the math works.
